NEOWTA is hosting Nick Cook for a woodturning demonstration and hands-on classes. The demonstration is Saturday, April 26, 2025.  Classes are April 27, 28, 29.

The demonstration and classes are scheduled 8:30 am – 3:30 pm each day at the NEOWTA clubhouse located at 10117 E 50th St, Tulsa, OK.    

Planned demonstration topics will include skew chisel use (garden dibble,  muddler), simple projects with basic tools (honey dipper, snow man, baby rattle, muddler), simple chucking projects (ring holder, goblet, salt box, acorn box), collet chucking (wine stopper, spinning tops), basic bowls, and platters with textured rim.  

Nick Cook is a full time production turner producing a wide variety of gift items, one of a kind bowls & vessels as well as work for furniture makers and millwork contractors.  He spends much of his time teaching both individuals and groups throughout the country.  He has done workshops for woodturning groups in Australia and has also participated in the national woodturning symposiums in New Zealand.  He is a founding member of the American Association of Woodturners and has served as vice president and conference coordinator.  Nick was named the 12th  honorary lifetime member of the AAW.  He has written numerous articles for various woodturning publications including American Woodturner, Woodworkers Journal and American Woodworker.  He also has produced two videos: “Turning for Food” & “Turning for Fun and Profit.

Nick started woodworking in his father’s shop when he very young.  In 1988, he quit his real job and started turning for a living.  He has now been in the same shop for more than 30 years.  As a production turner, he produces furniture and architectural elements along with a wide variety of gift items.       

The demonstration and classes are scheduled 8:30 am – 3:30 pm each day at the NEOWTA clubhouse located at 10117 E 50th St, Tulsa, OK.  Demonstration day cost is $35 per person (lunch included) Demo can be paid for on the day of the demo.  Each class day is $150 per person (wood is included, lunch is not).  Classes must be paid for in advance, no refunds.  

Each student will have the opportunity to make as many of these project options as they are comfortable/capable of completing each class day (limit one each project type per student per day).  

Project options include:

    • Garden dibble – Learn to use the skew efficiently.
    • Honey dippers and icicle snowman ornaments
    • Double snowman ornament  – contrasting woods
    • Spurtle or muddler – spindle turning
    • Boxes – End-grain hollowing
    • Spinning tops – 2” x 2” x 6” hard maple
    • Salt shaker – simple project with a little mystery
    • Coffee scoop – contrasting woods
    • Plate/platter – Bowl gouge technique, texturing 
    • Bowl – More bowl gouge technique and chucking techniques
    • Lamp 
    • 3 Leg Stool – 12” dia x 2” poplar. 3 pcs 8/4 squares x 12”       
    • Peppermill – Exercise in drilling and form (peppermill mechanism supplied by student)   

NEOWTA classroom is equipped with 11 fully outfitted workstations containing full size Jet and Powermatic lathes.  Students may either use the club’s cutting  tools or bring their own.  Eye protection (safety glasses with side shields provided by the student) is mandatory, no exceptions.  Face shields are highly recommended (student or club supplied).  Dust masks are also highly recommended.
